The most wonderful associate was one who I never met.  One I never spoke to.
The words and the inspiration continue to grow each day and all that is wrong is
forgiven, all that has happened that made it tough is forgiven because this is my
future.

I may not work for Walmart anymore but will be attached to it always.

Sam Walton's 10 Rules for Success  
Not much need for an introduction, explanation or commentary. (ed.)

The basics ...

Rule #1  
Commit to your business. Believe in it more than anything else. If you love your work, you’ll be out
there every day trying to do the best you can, and pretty soon everybody around will catch the
passion from you - like a fever.

Rule #2  
Share your profits with all your associates, and treat them as partners. In turn, they will treat you
as a partner, and together you will all perform beyond your wildest expectations.

Rule #3  
Motivate your partners. Money and ownership aren’t enough. Set high goals, encourage
competition and then keep score. Make bets with outrageous payoffs.

Rule #4  
Communicate everything you possibly can to your partners. The more they know, the more they’ll
understand. The more they understand, the more they’ll care. Once they care, there’s no stopping
them. Information is power, and the gain you get from empowering your associates more than
offsets the risk of informing your competitors.

Rule #5  
Appreciate everything your associates do for the business. Nothing else can quite substitute for
a few well-chosen, well-timed, sincere words of praise. They’re absolutely free and worth a
fortune.

Rule #6  
Celebrate your success and find humour in your failures. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Loosen
up and everyone around you will loosen up. Have fun and always show enthusiasm. When all else
fails put on a costume and sing a silly song.

Rule #7  
Listen to everyone in your company, and figure out ways to get them talking. The folks on the
front line - the ones who actually talk to customers - are the only ones who really know what’s
going on out there. You’d better find out what they know.

Rule #8  
Exceed your customer’s expectations. If you do they’ll come back over and over. Give them what
they want - and a little more. Let them know you appreciate them. Make good on all your
mistakes, and don't make excuses - apologize. Stand behind everything you do. ‘Satisfaction
guaranteed’ will make all the difference.

Rule #9  
Control your expenses better than your competition. This is where you can always find the
competitive advantage. You can make a lot of mistakes and still recover if you run an efficient
operation. Or you can be brilliant and still go out of business if you’re too inefficient.

Rule #10  
Swim upstream. Go the other way. Ignore the conventional wisdom. If everybody is doing it one
way, there’s a good chance you can find your niche by going exactly in the opposite direction.

Wal-Mart Announces Management Changes and Organization Realignment

Bentonville, Ark., Sept. 30, 2005 – Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. announced key management changes and a
realignment of responsibilities for some of its most senior executives, effective today.

Wal-Mart Stores and Wal-Mart International

John Menzer, president and CEO of Wal-Mart International, and Mike Duke, president and CEO of Wal-Mart
Stores, U.S.A., have been promoted to vice chairman positions within the company. Menzer will take
responsibility for major functions of the U.S. business, and Duke will take over leadership of Wal-Mart
International, the company’s fastest-growing division.

Eduardo Castro-Wright, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Wal-Mart Stores, U.S.A., has
been named president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, U.S.A., reporting to Menzer. Pat Curran, senior vice
president and a divisional manager for Wal-Mart Stores, U.S.A., has been promoted to executive vice
president for store operations, reporting to Castro-Wright.

Lee Scott, Wal-Mart president and CEO, said the shift in responsibilities for Menzer and Duke would benefit
both the U.S. and international businesses.

“John will continue to accelerate changes in the largest segment of our business,” Scott said. “During the last
six years, he transformed Wal-Mart International into a well-organized, fast-growing and profitable business.
Prior to that, as Wal-Mart’s corporate chief financial officer, John established a solid track record as a
business strategist who delivers results.”

In addition to his responsibility for Wal-Mart Stores, U.S.A., Menzer will head the divisions responsible for real
estate, logistics, information services, benefits, global procurement, financial services, store planning and
strategic planning.




Scott said Duke’s experience heading Wal-Mart’s largest operating unit in the U.S., coupled with his previous
experience as head of the company’s logistics operations, makes him uniquely qualified to run Wal-Mart’s
international business.

“Mike has brought to the U.S. operations exactly what was needed during the last couple of years,” said Scott.
“Mike has the ability and the management confidence to delegate responsibility to the best people in his
organization, and develop and promote them. This new assignment will give us the opportunity to apply those
skills to our overseas operations.”

As president of Wal-Mart Stores, U.S.A., Castro-Wright will be responsible for operations, merchandising,
marketing, specialty divisions and new business development in the company’s U.S. Wal-Mart Stores,
Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets.

“Since coming to the U.S. six months ago as the chief operating officer, Eduardo’s passion and vision have
helped us focus on how to serve our customers better while improving the performance and profitability of our
stores,” Scott said. “In his role as president and CEO of Wal-Mart Mexico, Eduardo led the team to high
standards of performance and growth.”
Scott said Curran, who takes on operational responsibility for all Wal-Mart stores in the U.S., is a great Wal-
Mart success story. He added, “Pat started as an hourly store associate in the pet department over 22 years
ago. She has served in a number of management positions, including department manager, store manager
and divisional merchandise manager. These experiences will help her serve our customers, our stores and all
our associates as she assumes this key position. Pat is a respected leader, a terrific communicator and
talented merchant. I look forward to the contributions she will make to Wal-Mart’s senior management team."
These changes represent an opportunity to boost our performance and help us become a more diverse and
global enterprise,” said Rob Walton, chairman of Wal-Mart’s board of directors. “John and Mike’s new
responsibilities take full advantage of the skills they bring to our company. Elevating them to vice chairmen
will position them to contribute more broadly to the company.” In addition, Walton said, “Eduardo, with Pat’s
assistance, will bring new perspectives and fresh ideas to our business in the U.S. and help us accelerate the
changes we need to make.”

Early on a Sunday morning I wonder how many Walmart Associates have gone to work instead of church
because they have no choice?
Even thought Walmart Corporate says they do not have control, over all the store managers they have
basic policies that are supposed to be followed.
I personally know of store managers who could care less about a person's desire to attend church and
have seen associates upset by being forced to choose.
For some reason I don't think Sam meant it to be that way.
Every day is a day where the associates that remain continue to be herded by their individual store
manager to do as he/she wishes and nothing more.
The posters and quotes on the walls mean nothing.
The three beliefs are truly a thing of the past and the culture is dead.
I am in the period of denial that follows being part of "The Cult" and it seems to take for ever for any kind of
recovery to take hold.
Seriously, I pray they will wake up, send an email and hope someone will open their door and see what
has gone wrong.
I just cannot believe this is Sam Walton's plan.
I cannot believe his family is so disconnected from what their father did.

'Twas 4:45 am that day.
Thanksgiving was over.
The turkey away.
The shoppers were out there.
Where could they be?
Not at our Walmart,
And not home asleep.

To Kmart and Best Buy,
The shoppers did go.
To Target and Penny’s,
Our Walmart was slow.
The head lights and highways,
Were busy you see.
The highway was crowded,
The mall was busy.

Even dear Santa,
He knew where to be.
He waited at Target,
Most did agree.
No reason to venture,
No reason to go.
The Walmart will draw you,
It’s part of the show.


The HD TVs are numbered you see.
At each Super Center a few more
than three.
With twenty or thirty at 800 a pop.
You wait on the list Black Friday a
flop.
Customer service is all in your head.
Sam’s way is over, Sam’s way is
dead.
No price change, No comping,
No Blitz as it was.
Black Friday for Walmart is not
what it was.

The holiday season is now
something new.
You like it you buy it,
No price change for you.
2 year service plan?
A real good idea.
It is made in China, and you need
that thing.
The register prompts it,
The register rings.
Debit or Credit?
Upscale it sings.



No lay a way, price match,
Or bargain is seen.
Black Friday will end,
As if in a dream.

On Target, on Kmart, on Best Buy a
sale,
On Bruno’s and Walgreen’s on
Macy’s
the malls.
The Bentonville Monster
Has taken a fall.
All of the others,
Out did the best.

They lost it, they dropped it,
Turned it to a mess.
Somehow they ruined a
Wonderful day.
The wrapping, excitement all gone
away.
Black Friday at Walmart was once,
Uncompared.

The workers, the pallets, the piles
were
All there.
The sales were enormous,
everybody was there.

An increase was yearly.
Each year how it grew.
What once was is over,
Now there are few.
Along with the others,
I buried among,
The Christmases over,
The Christmases done.

Walmart is dying.
Could this be the last?
Will they if ever.
Relive the past.
I seriously doubt it.
They just cannot see.
The millions they are losing.
The shoppers agree.

They don’t even wonder,
They don’t even try,
To make it to Walmart
They’ll  just let it die.

Customers trickle
Inside and out.
Then shop on ebay or Macy’s,
Without a doubt.

The deals they are better,
The customers say.
The workers are happy,
It’s not about pay.

A smile here, a smile there,
A laugh and a shout.
Walmart is something,
They can all do without.

Forgotten are customers,
Sam knew where there.
The ones who were trying,
To show others they care.
A mother, a father,
A man and his wife.
The people that needed,
A break in their life.

The wishes  that children,
Held closely all year.
The special toy doll that
Would ward off the tears.
The train set, the soldier the cars
and
The plane.
The phone and the TV that
shoppers would claim.

The items were made in the US of
A,
The bicycle tires they now throw
away.
From China and Hong Kong,
The lead painted Toys,
The shelves will be barren,
For girls and for boys.

The children see Santa, to tell him
their wish.
You buy it all elsewhere,
The elves know the pitch.
Buy it at Walmart,
It’s not for the rich.
It’s poisoned with toxins,
It’s soon in a ditch.

Save more, live better,
Is now what they say.
Always is over,
They gave it away.
Trash heap tomorrow
Buy it today.
Please don’t return it,
Don’t give it away.
And if it is broken,
It came in that way.

But if it’s from Kmart,
Or if it’s from Sears,
We’ll give you a refund
That card will buy beer.

The WIC check is good,
And the food that you buy,
Can come back tommarrow,
Even that pie.

The candy, the syrup, the meat and
the soy.
Will all be a trade off,
Will all be a joy.
If you need money, the trade will be
fair.
Your WIC card or food stamps,
Can help you out there.

What should be won’t matter,
We’ll give it with ease.
A card for your pocket,
Cause we aim to please.

It’s easy to give,
When you’re going to make,
A few million dollars,
Or whatever they make.
Wall Street is blinded,
Chuck is the Fool.
E-trade is all about,
Going to school.

Retail is fickle,
The stock price is fake.
Execs at Walmart,
Are in for the take.
Failure at this point.
It means not a thing.
Rob is in billions,
And Lee Scott does sing.

Their families are shopping,
The malls and the stores.
Not meant for the average,
Not meant for us all.
The Rolex and Gucci,
Cannot be bought here.
Walmart is having a wonderful year.

Free ads and PR is part of the
game.
Lawsuit and Walmart are now
viewed the same.

A free pass to refund,
The WIC check and more.
The government cannot,
Or won’t do much more.
How many children will not see a
thing.
No Christmas dinner but Mama
bought a ring.

Sam and now Helen,
I’m sure must be sad.
To see something wonderful,
Turn out so bad.
Sam called it evil.
Sam was a man who did love his
country,
And did the best anyone can.
He treasured his workers,
He shared with them too.
